Vigilant user spotting a phishing text message claiming to be from Coinbase

A growing number of reports highlight a phishing scam aimed at CoinBase users, with alarming messages making rounds. One particular text claims to provide a one-time password (OTP) for connecting a new device: β€˜Your OTP to connect a new device to your CoinBase is 977553. If you did not request this, please reach out to us immediately at +1 833-998-9476.’

Spotting the Red Flags

This deceptive text is laden with warning signs.

  • Misspelled Brand Name: "CoinBase" instead of the correct "Coinbase" raises caution for many. This remains a persistent issue though some argue that branding varies across advertising.

  • Questionable Contact Numbers: CoinBase typically uses short codes rather than toll-free numbers for communication, making this message suspect. For security reasons, knowing that the number doesn’t link back to an official contact is crucial.

  • Two-Factor Authentication: "It’s normally IN APP," emphasizes one user, reiterating that phone calls should not be part of a legitimate OTP transfer process.

Voices from the Community

User feedback showcases a blend of skepticism and concern. "Yes, I don’t even have a CoinBase account, so I won’t respond to that," shared one individual. Others expressed fears that someone could be trying to change account ownership with those messages, suggesting serious implications for data security.

The Ongoing Investigation

In an effort to gather more information, I contacted the provided number multiple times, encountering numerous individuals who promptly hung up when pressed about their tactics for obtaining user information. During my sixth call, I briefly engaged with a person who spoke with a British accent, but they quickly deflected questions before claiming they had to attend to "their quota." This inquiry yielded little clarity, leaving many questions unresolved.

"Stay safe, and verify before sharing personal info," urged a community member, underlining the importance of scrutiny in communications.

Societal Implications and User Reactions

The troubling trend of such scams reveals a significant disconnect in the trust users have in platforms like CoinBase. As a result, conversations about account safety and security measures have surged across various forums.

  • Concern over Data Handling: Recent discussions hint that a CoinBase employee may have mishandled sensitive user information, raising eyebrows over internal security practices.

  • Self-Custody: Many users are advocating for self-custody solutions as a way to safeguard their assets given the increasing frequency of scams.
